The Red Lion Chefs delight in creating traditional, homemade meals incorporating both local and seasonal produce at its best. We are very proud to have been the first pub to have become Associate Members of the New Forest Marque for our use of local New Forest produce. Wherever possible the Chefs insist on buying from the New Forest area.
From fresh, flavoursome ingredients come delicious dishes and here at The Red Lion we love good wholesome food. We scrutinize local suppliers to ensure we only use those who take pride in , and excel at, providing the very best. The butchers we use supply us with local meat and steaks, they place the highest emphasis on quality, freshness and supporting local farmers.
Our menu is fully homemade (with just one exception - our chips!) and our daily Chef’s Special board features really local dishes. For instance New Forest Venison, in season, from licensed game dealers, part of the sustainable deer management of the New Forest. Being so close to the sea, our 'Chef’s specials' also feature fresh fish and shellfish dishes, which we endeavour to source as locally as possible. All are Marine Security council approved, from sustainable sources. Fish dishes, especially whole fresh fish, are prepared simply, to enhance the taste and not overwhelm the natural flavour.
In warmer months, we make a daily trip to Snooks Farm to pick up whole, fresh, dressed Lymington crabs, such a treat, served with a simple fresh salad and new potatoes. A harbinger of summer;however we can fetch crab at any time, just give us some warning. Look out for our Pudding Boards, where a daily, very tempting selection is available. Our puddings are all homemade on the premises, using the finest ingredients to make puddings 'just like mother used to make'. We also offer a cheeseboard with a selection of Loosehanger Cheeses from the New Forest; we think they are really tasty and hope you will too.
